Beyond Returning Home: Why Reintegration Must Be Community-Led
As thousands of Zimbabweans make the difficult journey home, one truth is becoming increasingly clear: returning home is only the beginning.
For many years, the conversation around migration has centred on departure—why people leave, how they travel, and the challenges they face abroad. Yet far less attention has been given to what happens when they come back. The real measure of success is not whether someone crosses the border safely, but whether they are able to rebuild a meaningful life once they arrive.

It is about restoring dignity, strengthening communities, and creating opportunities for people to contribute once again to Zimbabwe’s future. They should not be viewed as people who have failed, but as people with experience, resilience and potential.
Successful reintegration requires a coordinated response.
Government has an essential leadership role. International organisations bring technical expertise and resources. Communities provide belonging and acceptance. Civil society organisations bridge the gap between policy and people, helping individuals navigate legal issues, documentation, employment, business development, housing and emotional recovery.

The question should not simply be, “How do we help people come home?” but rather, “How do we create an environment where they can thrive after they return?”
The current moment challenges us to think differently about migration. Return should never represent the end of hope. Instead, it should mark the beginning of restoration.
When government, communities, churches, businesses and organisations work together, reintegration becomes more than a response to crisis—it becomes a strategy for rebuilding lives, strengthening communities and investing in Zimbabwe’s future.
Home should not simply be where people return.
Home should be where they can begin again.
